Pith Records a small, independent not-for-profit organisation run by a collective of disastrously unorganised people in Melbourne, Australia. We run shows, release records, manage artist activity, disseminate information, and many other things.
People seem to ask a lot of questions when we say nope, no contracts and throw around phrases like not for profit. You can read our documenation of the label's evolution at the start an indie label section of this site, but for the moment here's a quick FAQ:
Q: What is Pith?A: Ostensively, a co-op record label. The people that run the label are in the bands on the label, and the label itself makes no profit. In fact, we run at a continual loss. We operate within a non-hierarchical management structure and keep our dealings as transparent as possible. We use 'ethical' means to our various ends wherever possible and support people/organisations of like mind as much as we can.
Q: How does Pith do what it does?A: There are a few of us here (check out the crew listing for more info), all with strengths in various areas. Businessey stuff, recording, promotion, web design and so on. Earth, wind, fire, water, heart. GO PLANET!
Q: Can I get involved?A: Yup. Just jump on the forum and say hi - we are planning to get a street team up and running as soon as possible but for the moment the forum is the way to go...
Check out the get involved section of the site for more info on this.
Q: Will you sign my band?A: Nope. Absolutely not, don't even ask. If we spot you at shows and like what you're doing who knows, but it's probably better you spend your time working on developing your band into something worth taking notice of than annoying labels begging to be signed.
Q: I have more questions!!A: Go and post on the forums, or get in contact with someone on the crew, we're all vaguely approachable.
[ Editors note: Occasionally I have people call me up or email me asking "hey what's the deal with X" or "How did you manage Y?". This is cool, it's nice to have feedback and I absolutely love talking about this stuff, but please first read the indie label diaries and do some of your own research first. Time is precious! ]
