On Priorities, and Not Being a Prick
Posted: Friday, September 1st, 2006 by Will DaybleIt’s been a long while since I’ve posted in these diaries, mostly because I’ve been incredibly busy. Pithrecords.com is moving to a new system and layout and everything very soon, in fact I’m writing this entry on the new system.
Anyway, this one is about people, and business mans with their business plans. It’s amazing how angry some people are. I recieved two standout emails today, one from an anal-retentive client at my ‘day’ job (web design) complaining about work not being done on time, and the other regarding these very start-an-independent-record-label diaries.
The first email was from a client who is controlling, stressed, angry, dissapproving, and generally hard to be around. He complained a bit, then expected me to leap to his beg and command. Unfortunately I have to act professional and not tell him to get stuffed. Luckily he’s from the UK, so I needn’t actually see the guy face to face.
The second email was from Portland in the US, from a guy called Gregory. It goes a little bit like this:
I just wanted to shoot you an email expressing my gratitude for what you are doing at Pith. From what i can gather from reading the Pith diary entries, you and i seem to be a lot alike. I’m just a few steps behind you.
Reading the diary entries has been immensly helpful as i return to old thoughts of an indie label. i’ve always been somewhat business minded and have done my fair share of research and “trial by fire” so to speak. It seems my ideas are/were headed in the right direction, but some points made in the entries have sort of tied some things together. I really just want to say thanks for the help and give you a pat on the back. cheers.
Now I think about it, I’ve recieved quite a few of these now. People either expressing gratitude or asking questions, generally I have to honest answer with “I have no fecking idea really, I’m clueless with all this, good luck though”. I really dig it though, it’s awesome to speak to like minds, feedback and comments and ideas, it’s energising.
Accordingly! *resolute finger in the air*
Having these two emails appear in close proximity made me realise where my priorities lie. It’s possible to make horrendous amounts of money if you’ve a bit of arrogance, flexible morality and a go-getter attitude. For some people I’m sure it’s a way of life. As for the rest of us - we can put up with the people who give us money or we can turn our back on the hand that feeds and go find nicer people to hang around with.
So, Gregory from Portland, this entry is for you. As of 12:14am, 1st September 2006 I am quitting my day job.
I’ll keep the nicer clients on board and take on work from a few of the cool people I’ve met recently, but otherwise, I quit.
I quit the stupid rat race, business and money and the lust for success. It’s a waste of time, space, and grace. I’m going to do this label full time. I’m going to run more charity stuff. I got a whole bunch of emails from people wanting to help out with Mentalfest too, DJs and artists and volunteers, and the buzz is incomparable.
I … quit.
:)
Thanks Gregory.
