She Spits Macabre at Glen Waverley Festival »
She Spits Macabre
Thursday, May 20th, 2004
Our own Will Dayble met up with SSM’s guitarist Andrew, and singer Jake for an interview, here is what he had to say:
Will:yo… okay first off, Who is your daddy, and what does he do? (name an instrument please)
Andy: i play guitar, and back up vocals.. i am also doing some of the electronic stuff that will be on our CD
I haven’t worked out any questions by the way.. sorry bout that
no problemo
what electronic stuff?
well, i’ve been playing around with writing really short electronica tracks on a program called fruityloops, so we decided we’d include a track or two on the macabre CD. Also, the introduction track to the CD is going to be vocals over an electronic backing.
I see… are they any good?
no, they’re pretty shit.. so i figure they’ll fit in well with our actual songs.
ah, so your band rocks huh?
haha, we enjoy what we do, i guess thats all that matters at the moment.
crap, I don’t have any more questions… if you were me what would you ask you?
dont interviewers ask something about musical influences?
oh yeah - good one… well, what other bands does your band rip off?
as many bands as we can. Orchid, The Blood Brothers, Refused, Love Like… Electrocution and The Plot To Blow Up The Eiffel Tower are a few of our major influences.
rockin… now.. uhh… if you were to die in 10 seconds what would you say right now?
talk is cheap..
… and now Will talks to Jake
Will: who is you daddy, and what does he do? (name and instrument)
jake… I don’t have an instrument. Um… wordsmith. Yeah, that’s it.
you sing?
You could put it that way I guess.
how would you put it?
I am one of the two kids who jump up and down spouting an assortment of passe sloganeering. You know, angry white boy sort of junk.
I see… what do you spout about?
Mostly political, but I try to speak in general terms. A lot of bands out there choose to speak about specific issues, which means that obsoletion comes with the next headlines… I guess I prefer to deal in umbrella statements which hopefully cover more than one issue… sort of a blueprint for a new morality if that makes sense.
you’re gunna change the world huh?
The world is fucked already… I’m focusing on perceptions. We are all dreamers at heart, but you have to take it one step at a time.
I see.. do yo have big plans for SSM? World domination or anything?
I don’t know… how can you define something like that?
with words I guess
Well, I guess every musician or lyricist or whatever sort of dreams of the stadium show where you hold up the microphone and the crowd screams the words you wrote back to you… But for the moment, I really just want to have a good time with it, write some decent songs, play some crazy sets and hopefully have some kids witness it and dig it
I mean, it’s not all about winning approval, if it was it would be meaningless and irrelevant to me, but it’s a nice thought.
of course… okay… what’s the deal with your new CD?
Well… um…
We will be recording for Pith Records (which is hell cool) in about 4 weeks I think, as soon as our more junior members get some time from their brainwashing sessions… It will probably have about 8 tracks on it, can’t tell you which as yet… also a lot of awesome beats produced by our guitarist’s side project noahwillbeyourgrave… crazy synth stuff…
Basically, we’re just going to try and bring out something which is going to make kids sit there and think “Shit, my head has exploded”.
So yeah, I think that is as it lays at the moment, I’m sure I’m forgetting or messing something up, but we’ll fix it up in post
sounds prety jive… Now what’s all this about the macabre straight edge controversy?
Well, at the moment, we are sort of stuck between a rock and a hard place.
You see, a while back now we played this party and - being the responsible adults we are - got a bit pissed, with circles drawn on our hands, which obviously mocks the X’s that adorn the straight edge crowd…
Mind you, we didn’t start it.
But the pictures were sent around the internet, you know, the whole macho “this must be stopped” sort of thing.
god forbit sXe kids be macho.
Yeah… that eventually died down.
However, we later auditioned a new singer, Dillon, who was straight edge. I personally do not have a problem with sXe kids, as long as their sXe doesn’t mean I can’t drink, smoke etc.
But yeah, we played a gig with him before deciding that it wasn’t working out (band politics… blah de blah)… All the punk kids now think we are a straight edge band. So we are hated both for not being straight edge and for being straight edge.
It’s just all stupid scene politics really.
sounds like fun… Well I’m done… any last words?
Kids have got to start loving each other again. Without the love, there is nothing.
… only strange noughts and crosses wars.
Yeah, for sure.
We’re drawing love hearts on our hands when we drink now. We’ll see what happens with that.
my guess is you’ll get beaten up for being either homosexual or homophobic, depending on the crowd…
haha… It could go either way.
yah… Well thanks for the interview, and good luck with the new CD!
Please note individual items are the those of the autor, not Pith Records. Don't blame us.
